Final Reflection

What have I learnt in this module?

I have learned the fundamental design principles that form the main components of design work. I am now able to create pieces that are truly effective in conveying a message by applying these design principles. Design principles such as visual hierarchy, contrast, balance, movement, and so on could specifically guide a user's eyes and provide a seamless experience. I believe all of the knowledge I have learned in this module could come in handy in the coming years. Additionally, instead of learning design principles, I had a great time experimenting with new ideas and figuring out how to apply them more effectively.  I have learned how to choose, analyze, and create meaningful and appealing artwork throughout the learning journey.

What did I enjoy the most?

My experience in this module was very enjoyable, it inspired many new ideas and I gained new knowledge and skills. I really like this module because it is a fun and decompressing course where we are free to create whatever we like as long as we incorporate design principles into our work. I appreciate that Dr. Jin Chi respects our opinions as she asks for our favorite ideas and freely exchanges ideas with us every time, instead of directly deciding students' work and style. I enjoyed the moment of being able to present the work perfectly, it filled me with a sense of accomplishment and joy as we were able to produce something that was unique to us.

What did I not enjoy the most?

What I do not enjoy most is the hard time coming up with satisfying ideas when there is no inspiration. Since we have to complete the tasks within the stipulated time, when the deadline is approaching, I will feel stressed because I am not a procrastinator, so I will want to complete the task as soon as possible. I always do things with a fast-paced lifestyle and I hope sometimes I can learn to slow down appropriately because I know that if I rush through the design process, I won't produce my best work.

What have I learnt about myself through this module?

As I keep practicing designing my own pieces, I get a better understanding of myself through this module. For example, in the self-portrait project, I learn to figure out who I am, which I have never thought about deeply before. I find myself in this project, they reveal to me what I like, what I do every time, and how I look in the perspectives of others and myself. I really appreciate the effect of this project because it really helped me understand myself better when I researched myself and knew exactly what I wanted. In addition, I also found that I like to design artworks that have meaning and stories. For example, I designed the Ukraine peace poster in the repetition exercise, the garbage river artwork in the movement exercise, and the mother's day theme in the symbol design artwork, and girls' education inequality in the final project.

What has changed and what has not in my learning journey?

I have always created artwork based on my own aesthetic and intuition before. However, through this module, I realized that effective design contains so much information and principles. By understanding these design principles, I am now able to create art that really works. Also, my observation skills have improved after taking this module. For example, I would pay more attention to real-life environments, people, objects, and small details that I had previously overlooked to determine their design aspects and what the designer was trying to bring into the feel. On the other hand, my passion and persistence in designing artworks that can convey meaningful messages have not changed, and I hope to continue my efforts to create impactful artworks that can contribute to society in the future.

What could be improved in this module?

For my own improvement, I recognize that design principles and my own way of thinking may differ from others. What I perceive may not be known to others, and even what others perceive I may not be able to see. I need to learn to outline my arguments and concepts and practice different design components from time to time to allow me to produce the most effective and engaging work.

In terms of improvements to this module, I feel that the current way of teaching is good enough because we can freely design our work and get a lot of useful input from Dr. Jin Chi, which helps us to discover our own potential and a better understanding of design principles. A big thanks to our lecturer Dr. Jin Chi, the most dedicated and patient educator, for her enduring patience and genuine concern for us throughout this module.
