Lecture Notes

Balance, Emphasis, Repetition, Movement, Hierarchy and Alignment

👉Balance

- The distribution of visual weight in design work.

- The visual balance of elements that make the entire image appear balanced.

- Balance can be symmetrical or asymmetrical.

  • Symmetrical - Symmetrical balance has equal "weights" on equal sides of a centrally placed fulcrum, which is the average arrangement of the elements.

  • Asymmetry - Uneven visual weight on each side of the composition. One side of the composition may contain the dominant element, while the other side may be balanced by a few or smaller focal points. It will create a more dynamic and interesting design that evokes a sense of modernism, movement, energy, and vitality.

👉Emphasis

- Emphasis is used to create strength and focus in design work.

- A variety of elements can be used to create emphasis, such as color, shape or value, to achieve dominance.

👉Repetition

- Repetition often uses repeated items or patterns to make designs seem active.

- The repetition of design elements creates rhythm and pattern in the work to increase visual stimulation by enriching surface interest.

- Variety is essential to keep the rhythm exciting and active and to avoid monotony.

👉Movement

- The way a design guides the eye in, around and through the composition.

- Motion or movement in visual image occurs when objects appear to move in the visual image.

- Movement in visual image comes from the various shapes, forms, lines and curves used.

👉Hierachy

- The arrangement of content in the work conveys information and meaning.

- Visual hierarchy guides viewers to the most important information first and identifies navigation through secondary content.

👉Alignment

- Elements are placed in such a way that their edges line up along a common row or column, or their bodies line up along a common center.

- Alignment creates a sense of unity and cohesion and is a powerful means of guiding one through a design.

Exercise 2

Choose TWO principles from Emphasis / Balance / Repetition / Movement. Create 1 design for each chosen principle.

Part A: Repetition

Visual Research

In the visual research of repetition, I found a lot of themes about animals. The designers copied and reflected the animals to create interesting and patterned works.

Idea Exploration

- Peace for Ukraine

Regarding the animal idea, I came up with the repetition of the pigeon, which led me to design the theme of peace for Ukraine.

2. Mockup

Carton box

Paper bag

3. Poster

Feedback

The repetition design creates a pattern, and it is a good attempt to mock up the design work into a real object. The poster design also shows excellent graphic design skills.

Final Design Outcome

Now in Ukraine, we see the need for a peaceful world, and we encourage all efforts to restore peace to this country in turmoil. This poster indicates Peace For Ukraine demonstration will be held at Taylor's University on March 13 at 12 noon.

Part B: Movement

Visual Research

Regarding the source of inspiration for movement, I was mainly looking for the design of the river creatures.

Figure 4 (Source: https://pin.it/OQ2JqAb )

Idea Exploration

- Goromo fish drifting with the flow

Taking the river as the theme, I decided to design a group of small Goromo fish swimming in the river, and combine the body of the main Goromo fish to create a sense of oneness.

Draft 2

Draft 3

- River of garbage

From the visual research of Figure 4, I came up with the theme of river pollution. I designed a boy rowing a boat in the river with garbage drifting in the direction of the boat, which illustrates the seriousness of river pollution.

Feedback

The design of Goromo fish drifting with water is good enough, but the design of garbage river needs to be refined, adding more garbage and messiness to show the seriousness of river pollution.

Final Design Outcome

The message of this design is to convey that littering is causing serious pollution to the river. When trash—plastic bags, bottles, straws, etc are thrown on the ground, they get washed into storm drains and directly into our waterways. In addition to potentially choking, suffocating, or disabling aquatic life like ducks, fish, turtles, and birds, litter decreases oxygen levels in the water when it decays. Litter is one of the most unsightly forms of pollution in our local waterways, but it's easy to prevent. Most waste can be recycled, which not only protects the environment but also saves our natural resources.

Reflection

In Exercise 2, I chose repetition and movement because I have more creative ideas for these two design elements. During the visual research process, I quickly came up with some ideas and successfully completed the finished product. In designing the repetition of peace for Ukraine, I thought of designing box packaging and paper bag, and had self-learning to mock up through Youtube. At last, I am very happy that I was able to successfully present the effect I wanted.
