Flip 1

For this task, we were instructed as a group to create a slide showing the different types of infographics, the types of information they apply to, and examples of each identified type.

Redesigning an infographic

In week 1, we were asked to redesign one poorly constructed infographic poster with a free online infographic tool and upload it to our blog. We are then required to have before and after comparisons and rate the online tool used.

Here is a poor infographic I chose to redesign. First, there is no clear header as the title and subtitle are mixed together. There's a ton of text that doesn't engage the reader and a bad picture of someone with depression that just depresses the reader instead of grabbing their attention.

To solve this problem, I separated the important title information from the rest of the infographic. Next, I replaced the unattractive photos with icons to illustrate each point. I also summarize the content and highlight the necessary points. I used dark purple and yellow to create contrast. Lastly, I used several fonts that are more legible and have a more attractive look, such as League Spartan, Poppins, and Poppins Light.

Rating and Review of Online Infographic Tool (Canva):
Difficulty, Intuitiveness: 8.5/10
Canva is an easy-to-use app. The interface is simple and features are easy to find. Users can search for related elements or templates in the search bar, making the entire process convenient and efficient.

Usability: 8/10
Canva offers a fair amount of free elements. The graphics provided are also watermark-free and non-paid, thus no need to look elsewhere for graphics. There are also a variety of fonts to choose from.

Design Templates, Choices: 8/10
Through Canva, users can search keywords to choose suitable templates in multiple categories, such as size, color palette, and style. These templates also offer good color schemes and font choices. We can also simply customize the templates we chose.

Flip 2

We were tasked to research the L.A.T.C.H. theory by Saul Wurman and create a video presentation.

Flip 3

In our group, we were required to present an explanation of Chunking and provide an example of how to best utilize this technique in terms of visual delivery for each of this approach:

1- A well designed infographic
2- UX/UI, web, app, games (screen based basically!)
3- Processes

Flip 4

In our group, we were required to present an explanation on Manuel Lima’s 9 Directives Manifesto and find one example of how to best display and utilize design for each of the directives.

As conclusion, we also need to present one good designed infographic that best illustrates the 9 directives for information visualizations and one poorly designed infographic that failed to address the directives.

Reflection

Through the FLIP assignments, the experience increases the level of engagement between the student and the instructor, as well as among the students themselves. We had to conduct our own research and create slides to present in class, which really helped me gain a deeper understanding of design concepts and create more meaningful learning opportunities. I personally learned a lot after analyzing and using the 9 manifestos, as we had to analyze an infographic and try to apply all the manifestos as much as possible. One of the most important points is that the visuals should not overwhelm the actual information, and I feel like I can easily overlook this. Even though an infographic is visually appealing, it can still fail in its purpose as an infographic.
