Harmony / Unity / Symbol / Word and Image

👉Harmony

- Involves selecting elements with common characteristics.

- Harmony becomes monotonous without variety.

- The sense that all elements of the design fit together. They may fit the same theme, aesthetic style or mood.

👉Unity

- Refers to the repetition of specific elements throughout the design

- Occurs when the elements are combined in a balanced way and give a sense of unity, creating a theme.

👉Scale and Proportion

-Scale and proportions are both size-related design elements.

Scale

- The size of an object in a design relative to other objects. Scale refers to the size and dimensions of figures and forms relative to a specific unit of measurement.

- The scale can be determined in two ways: actual measurements and visual estimation based on comparison.

Proportion

- Refers to the size of parts of an object relative to other parts of the same object, and how they compare in size, color, quantity, extent, circumstance, etc.

- Proportion is the relative size of parts of whole objects.

👉Symbol

- Symbols are used to communicate or send ideas.

- A sign, shape or object used to represent something else.

- In design, symbols can provide or convey information, equivalent to one or more sentences of text, or even a complete story.

- There are two types of symbols: figurative representation and non-figurative representation.

- Figurative representation stands for graphic symbols, such as:

  • Pictorial symbols: refers to image-related and simplified pictures.

  • Abstract symbols: refers to the symbol that looks like the objects that they represent but have fewer details.

  • Arbitrary symbols: There is no resemblance to objects or the ideas they represent. The symbol is invented according to the constructed meaning. Many are based on geometric shapes and colors.

👉Word and Image

- Images are an important part of a design, be it print or digital.

- If the right imagery is used in design work, users and viewers can associate with a concept or brand.

- It is very important to choose the right word to pair with the image as it will deepen the meaning of the design.

- The right typeface and strategic positioning of typefaces will result in visual hierarchy and balance in the design work.

Exercise 3

Part A: Harmony

Visual Research

Draft 4

Feedback

The artwork conveys a sense of harmony and it can clearly be seen that it is inspired by visual research but still maintains its own theme. It is suggested to try designing a different horizontal view than the visual research I inspired.

Final Design Outcome

The design is based on the snow mountain theme, using color harmony so that all elements fit together. Use adjacent colors, that is, pair colors next to each other on the color wheel, with one color as the dominant color and another color to support and enhance the scheme. By using adjacent color harmony, it is very pleasing to the eye and is more colorful than a monochromatic color scheme.

Feedback

For Mother's Day symbol design, change the position of mother and baby to the middle, adjust the mother watching the baby to cuddling the baby to create a feeling of affection. Also, the baby can use a lighter yellow to highlight or change the main color to pink or purple for a feminine theme. The green shirt below the mother can reduce by placing the characters slightly down or enlarging the flower slightly. Additionally, the mother‘s hands are too sharp and need to be adjusted.

In the second design of Pisces, remove the middle line or remove the entire diamond and middle line, because it's too complicated when organic fish and geometric shape coexist.

Final Design Outcome

The upcoming Mother's Day falls on the second Sunday in May every year. My mother is the most important person in the world, she is my first best friend and the one who gave me advice when I was lost.  Mother’s Day is a special time to show love for all the wonderful women in our life. This design artwork mainly praises the greatness and maternal love of mothers in raising their children and commemorates the contributions made by mothers to the family. Carnations are perfect flowers for the occasion of Mother’s Day. The flower is synonymous with affectionate feelings for someone who we love and adore.

Reflection
In Exercise 3, I finally chose harmony and symbol as the design theme. Since I am a mountain climbing enthusiast, I am very interested in the theme of mountains, so I decided to design snow-capped mountains in terms of harmony. In the process, I experimented with several different color schemes and fumbled around to find adjacent colors to create a sense of harmony, and I ended up with a harmonious effect.

In terms of symbols, I designed a symbol for the upcoming Mother's Day, and created my own works based on love, carnations, and maternal love. In addition, Pisces, as my zodiac sign, has also become my second source of inspiration. I have also benefited a lot from Ms. Jin Chi's opinions and evaluations, which have helped me better understand the principles of design and improve my aesthetic ability.
