Kiki's Delivery Service is a 1989 Japanese animated fantasy film written, produced, and directed by Hayao Miyazaki. It tells the story of following the tradition of trainee witches, thirteen-year-old Kiki embarks on a spiritual journey with her pet black cat, Jiji on a full moon day. However, the journey of cultivation did not start smoothly. When Kiki came to a big city by sea, people did not welcome her, and everyone ignored her. Fortunately, Kiki has a kind heart. When she finds a lost item, the enthusiastic Kiki finds the owner. Her kindness won the favor of the bakery proprietress, and Kiki started her express business in the bakery, serving customers with flying magic. Kiki quickly adapts to the new environment. Once, a boy who is keen on aircraft manufacturing invites Kiki to attend a party in the flying club. On the way, Kiki gets caught in the rain while helping an old lady deliver something. Since then, Kiki suddenly finds that her magic is getting weaker day by day.

Idea Exploration

Layout 1

Layout 2

Layout 3

Layout 4

I chose the scene where Kiki is riding her broomstick looking for a place to stay on a full moon day. In the progress, I tried out multiple layouts and applied some techniques to the poster design, including:

  • Kiki's shirt, hair, ribbon, bag, radio and broom - Light and shadow by using blob paint draw inside and live paint bucket

  • Moon- clipping mask adds watercolour texture
  • Building- apply texture effect
  • Sea- gradient

Feedback

The task is on the right track. Awesome job. Keep up with the design exploration especially. The more you look at other works, the more you will expand your conceptual + design skills. Overall, you got good chops at it, so that will be a plus.

Final Design Outcome

Keeping minimalism in mind, I chose Layout 3 as my final design result and repainted the stars to be more realistic and luminous.

Animated GIF

In the animated GIF, Kiki & birds fly up and down, the radio blow in the wind, and stars shine in the night.
