Week 1 Practical

Recommend 3 motion graphics

1. Google

Sometimes concepts seem difficult to convey visually. However, this video from Google only uses a combination of regular graphics, motion, and abstract shapes to tackle a very vague concept of data collection, distribution, and storage. In this animation, all the scenes come together and let my imagination run wild. This video showcases Google's strengths in using machine intelligence, analytics, and network-scale processing. It presents an indescribably contextual scene through a 2D animated video.

2. Brady Corp

This video grabs my attention from the jump. It explains the purpose of Brady's Active ID Labeling solution which minimizes human error through data center cable management and security. It contains relevant graphic elements, interesting visuals, and coherent explanations. Not only does it keep the audience engaged, but it also gives an accurate picture of the situation.

3. Spline

Spline makes 3D animations look so fun to watch. This video does a great job of showing their mission and the value they add to designers. Animations are bright and vivid. They transition from each step in detail to the next while showing how the effect changes between 3D and 2D graphics.

Week 2 Practical

Kinetic Typography

For this exercise, we learned how to create kinetic typography for the music of P!nk - So What "So, so what? I'm still a rock star " by setting the keyframes, adjusting the position, applying null object, setting guidelines and title safe and adding other effects like motion blur and text by text animation.

Week 4 Practical

Vector Animation

In week 4, we learned how to create vector animation such as bounce effects, adjusting the position, scale, and rotation as well as applying wiggle and puppet tools.

Project 2

Part A: Kinetic Typography

As a group, we were assigned to choose a song to create a lyric video using After Effects. After some discussion and voting, our group decided to use the song Arctics Monkeys- 505 based on its rhythm and lyrics.

Once the song was chosen, we discussed the art direction at Miro, such as the color palette, typeface, composition, and suggested certain words to be designed into type expressions. We then split the music into chorus and verse to assign our tasks.

Part B: Pie Chart

A chart is a graphical representation of data visualization.
Chart types:
1. Pie chart
2. Donut diagram
3. Bar chart
4. Line chart

Based on a google sheet, I was assigned to design a motion pie chart to visualize the following information about the factors of pressures affecting college students.

Part C: Vector Animation

For this exercise, I was assigned to design a vector animation with the provided AI file about the Chinese New Year.

Before starting to animate in AE, I separated the elements into different layers and renamed each layer to make it easier during the animation process. I then start animating the vector art and make sure to apply the formatting and functions that Mr. Martin requested, such as:

1. Animation: Position, scale, or/and rotation (Bounce Effect),
2. Layer: Motion Blur,
3. Keyframe: Easy Ease,
4. Wiggle  OR/AND Puppet position pin tool

Reflection

Throughout the project, I learned more about the tools and features used in Adobe After Effects. This project sparked my new interest in motion graphics and simple animation. On the other hand, the difficulty of this task is the time limit. The lack of time to complete this project played a large role in producing high-quality results. The time is limited, because our short semester is only 7 weeks, and the Chinese New Year takes up around 1 week. I also learned how to balance work and leisure time better.
